Horse Energiser Buyer's Guide

Energiser for horse fences

If you want to securely fence your horses and ponies in a pasture or paddock, investing in a quality electric fence energiser is essential. A good energiser ensures that your horses remain safely contained while also protecting them from unwanted intruders.

With the vast selection of devices available, finding the right one can be a daunting task. Alongside various power supply options (mains electricity, solar power, or battery operation), the performance (charging and discharging energy) is a crucial factor to consider.

In this article, we aim to clarify your choices and simplify the selection process.

Key Considerations when choosing an electric fence energiser

Power Rating: The power output of the energiser, also referred to as strike energy (measured in Joules), should be tailored to the size of your grazing area, specifically the length of the fence, and the type of animal being contained. For shorter horse fences, we recommend devices with a minimum output of 1 Joule. Larger pastures or those with dense vegetation will require more powerful devices. It's always advisable to select a unit with a higher power rating to ensure you have sufficient capacity for future fence expansions or to cope with increased vegetation.

Power Supply: Depending on your fence's location, different power sources are available to operate the energiser. We recommend using a mains-powered energiser whenever possible; however, this requires a nearby fixed power supply. Mains units are typically only splash-proof, so they should be installed in a sheltered area, such as a stable or under a shed roof.

For remote pastures and mobile fencing, a solar energiser is often the best choice. These modern systems operate independently of mains electricity or rechargeable batteries, making them particularly eco-friendly and more cost-effective in the long run compared to battery or mains units. Thanks to advancements in technology, many solar devices can function for up to three weeks without direct sunlight, as daylight is sufficient.

Battery-operated energisers are also suitable for temporary or mobile grazing areas. Depending on the device's power, a pasture battery may need replacing every 65-90 days, while a rechargeable battery typically requires recharging every 5-35 days. It's wise to have spare batteries or an additional rechargeable unit on hand to cover any charging downtime.

Quality and Durability: We only offer high-quality devices from reputable brands. These products are specifically designed and tested for demanding use on riding schools and farms. They are weather-resistant, durable, and feature high-quality stainless steel contacts along with robust switches and buttons. Additionally, Gallagher devices come with a seven-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Accessories: If you want to do more than just fence your pasture—such as controlling the fence remotely via your smartphone or receiving notifications when performance parameters change—compatible accessories for energisers can be found in each product description. Consider enhancing your new unit with a lightning protection system, the appropriate number of earth stakes and cables, and for battery-operated devices, ensure you have the corresponding battery or rechargeable unit.

Horse Energiser FAQ's

Is electric fencing safe for horses?

Yes, when installed correctly. The shock is brief and unpleasant, but not harmful. It teaches horses to respect the fence without causing injury.

Can I use a cattle energiser for horses?

Yes, most energisers are designed to work for both horses and cattle. The key is choosing the right power level for your setup, horses are more sensitive, so you typically don’t need a high-joule unit unless you have long fence lines or heavy vegetation. Look for an energiser with output around 0.5–3 joules for most horse fencing. If using a more powerful unit, make sure it has adjustable settings. Pair it with visible fencing like tape or rope to help horses see and respect the fence safely.

Can I power multiple paddocks with one energiser?

Yes, with a properly designed layout and strong enough energiser, you can power multiple sections or paddocks using insulated lead-out cable.
