IP Ratings are an internationally recognised standard of environmental protection from particles and liquids. There are always two numbers: the first refers to 'particulate' protection and the second to 'liquids'. In this article we have a look at what to cosider when choosing a fence energiser.
Example 'IP65':
'6' = Dust tight. No ingress of Dust.
'5' = Protected against jets of water from any direction.
The diagram below gives full details of the current IP ratings.
These are some of the most common IP ratings for electric fence energisers
IP44
Protected against solid objects over 1 mm, such as small tools and wires. Protected against water splashing from any direction.Suitable for energisers that are placed in areas with some exposure to rain or light splashing but not directly exposed to heavy rainfall or jets of water. Semi-outdoor use, such as under a sheltered area or mounted on a wall with some protection from direct weather.
IP54
Dust-protected. Limited ingress of dust is allowed, but it will not interfere with the operation of the device. Protected against water splashes from any direction.Suitable for more exposed outdoor settings where dust might be present, such as near roads or fields. Outdoor use with moderate protection from dust and rain.
IP65
Dust-tight. Complete protection against the ingress of dust. Protected against water jets from any direction. Ideal for energisers that are fully exposed to the elements, such as open fields, where they may be subjected to dust storms and strong rain.Direct outdoor use, including farms and rural areas.
IP66
Dust-tight. Complete protection against dust. Protected against powerful water jets from any direction. Suitable for high-exposure environments where the device might face heavy rain or spray.Ideal for locations with harsh weather conditions, such as coastal areas or regions with severe rainstorms.
IP67
Dust-tight. Full protection against dust.Protected against immersion in water up to 1 metre for up to 30 minutes.Perfect for installations where there is a risk of flooding or immersion, such as low-lying fields or near water bodies.Extreme outdoor conditions, including areas prone to temporary flooding.
