Solar Powered Electric Fencing

One of the problems with electric fencing is that it is often used far from a mains power source and therefore relies on heavy 12V batteries. A typical electric fence battery will last 2-6 weeks, depending on its capacity and the size of energiser being used. When the battery is discharged, it needs to be carried to a mains power supply to be recharged, which is not only inconvenient but leaves the fence inoperative.

To overcome this, many people are now choosing to use a solar panel to 'trickle charge' the electric fence battery, so that it never (or rarely) needs to be charged using a mains charger. In addition to a range of solar panels that can be retro-fitted to any 12V electric fence system, the Hotline P500S has been specifically designed as a self-contained solar electric fence energiser.

Don't forget, delivery is FREE on all orders over £250 (ex VAT) to most UK mainland destinations.

Whilst it is difficult to say exactly which solar panel is suitabel for which energiser, we have tried to simply matters with the following table:

Solar Panel Size (W)* Max energiser size (24hr operation, year round without charging)**
Current (mA) Consumption @ 12V (W) Typical Stored Joules***
5 60 0.7 0.5
10 120 1.4 1.0
15 180 2.2 1.5
20 240 2.9 2.0
30 360 4.3 4.0
60 730 8.8 8.0
85 1030 12.4 11.0
90 1090 13.1 12.0
100 1220 14.6 15.0
135 1640 19.7 19.0
* This is based on our solar panels only; other panels may not perform as well in many cases.
** This is for 24hr, year-round operation without charging, but it may benecessary to charge very occasionally in harsh winters or shaded areas; the panel should be south facing at 45-degrees.
*** This depends very much on the manufacturer, model and age of the energizer.
