Introduction and General Overview of Birth Alarm
A mare in foal will display protective instincts that go far deeper than the bond between the mare and her keeper.
The mares delivery is a time when she feels vulnerable and unless the mare is totally at ease, it is suspected that she can
actually delay the birth of the foal until she feels that she will not be disturbed.
In consequence, signals that the delivery is about to happen can be barely discernable or even absent. However,
research has shown that during her contractions the mare will lie down totally on her flanks. In this
totally lateral position the mare is able to gauge each contraction and control the final expulsive phase of
the delivery.
Birth Alarm works by utilising this physiological phenomenon.
Birth Alarm consists of a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter is attached to an antiroll girth
which is placed around the horse’s withers. The mare experiences no discomfort whatsoever from the leather
girth.
The transmitter has a range of 500 meters (1650 Feet), which can be extended with the aid of a GSM selector, telephone dialler or pager and is waterproof, so the
system is ideal for use with births that take place either in or outdoors. Set the receiver in the
desired place, for example in the bedroom and plug it in. A 12 volt adapter is available
for isolated locations. If you're often away from home, the Birth Alarm telephone selector allows the receiver
to call you at the number where you are available.
The latest models of Birth Alarm are fitted with a control function for testing the battery in the sender
and if the transmission signal is being received properly; (This version is recognisable
by the green label on the back of the sender and the receiver).
An expert in the area of equine
reproduction, Dr. Meyers, completed his residency in Theriogenology Veterinary Reproduction at Texas
A & M University in 1985. Since then he has worked within this field both at breeding farm level and University;
he is currently at the Cheltenham Veterinary Centre in Inglewood, Ontario. He provides the following endorsement...
'Having tested the Birth Alarm Foal monitoring
system on a number of mares it seems to
me that Birth Alarm is the ideal foaling
management tool for the breeder who does
not want to worry about unattended
foalings. It alerts the mare breeder that a
mare is foaling reliably and accurately. It is
very cost effective, especially in light of the
cost of stud fees these days. No mare breeder
truly serious about reproductive management
and wanting to minimize losses at
foaling through unattended birthing problems
can afford to be without this system. In
effect it is relatively inexpensive insurance.'
